Mat-Su transportation grant
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough expects to hear this summer whether its application for a $25 million federal infrastructure grant will be approved. The funds would be applied toward the half-completed railroad spur linking the bor- ough’s Port MacKenzie with the existing Alaska Railroad main line. The borough needs $125 million to finish the project, but believes costs can be reduced. Meanwhile, the Alberta-Alaska Railway Development Corp., a company work- ing on a long-range plan for a U.S.-Canada rail connection, may be able to contribute equity in completion of the rail spur to the port.
