First bids on big port reconstruction project in Anchorage

Anchorage officials will open bids next week on the first phase of reconstruction of the aging Port of Alaska, the fuel and cement dock. This will be the first “hard” bid on the project and a reality check on a $2 billion preliminary estimate for the entire project. The fuel and cement dock cost was estimated at about $250 million in the initial estimate. Meanwhile, city officials and port customers, mainly fuel and shipping companies, met last week to review plans and funding, including options for increases in port user fees. Port officials have some money available to build phase one but do not have the money for the full construction and cannot issue Requests for Proposals until they do.
